COLLEEN A. CHRISTIE

Colleen A. Christie graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Law in 2004 and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 2005. She moved to Calgary in the summer of 2006 and was called to the Alberta Bar in November 2006. Prior to completing her law degree, Colleen graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science, focused in the area of genetics.

Colleen has always had a strong commitment to Family Law. While studying law, Colleen volunteered for Pro Bono Students Canada and the University Law Clinic. She also worked as a summer student with the Manitoba Maintenance Enforcement Program. Colleen completed her articles at the Family Law Office of Legal Aid Manitoba and continued to work there, focusing on protecting the rights of victims of domestic violence. Additionally, she appeared before administrative tribunals in both residential tenancy matters and CPP appeals while practicing in Manitoba.

Starting in 2006, Colleen moved into private practice, specializing in divorce, child custody, child and spousal support, division of property and adoptions. Colleen’s background in genetics has been particularly useful in her adoption practice, given that the law has not kept pace with the social and medical changes in the conception, birthing and parenting of children.

Colleen enjoys both litigation and collaborative work, and takes every step to ensure her clients are directed to strategies for resolving their family law issues best suited to their needs, emotionally and financially.

Colleen works closely with every client to guide them through these challenging phases of their life and onto a new beginning.

FARRAH E. KOHORST

Farrah E. Kohorst completed her undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University in 2004 and her LL.B at the University of Calgary in 2007. During her articling year, just prior to joining the Bell and Stock team, Farrah discovered her natural attraction to the practice area of Family Law. She continues to thoroughly enjoy this practice area and anticipates developing her skills and expertise.

Farrah loves litigation, but believes in negotiation and mediation. She views herself as a tough, but reasonable lawyer who always strives to keep in mind the “big picture” and possible terms for settlement. She has no desire to work with clients who repeatedly insist on taking unreasonable positions based on pure emotion or spite. She understands separations are a difficult and stressful time filled with many emotions, but feels her clients are best served by being guided to an amicable, reasonable settlement which she strives to accomplish in a cost-effective and timely manner.

Additionally, Farrah was the mastermind behind the firm’s annual Gentleman’s Scotch n’ Learn which focuses on presenting basic principles of Relationship Law to the public. She believes public awareness of these principles is very important given the ever increasing statistics relating to common law separations and divorces. The firm plans to extend this annual seminar to a ladies only version in early 2010. Related to this concept is Farrah’s desire to continue to spend a good portion of her time focusing on co-habitation agreements and prenuptial contracts. This is an ever emerging area in Family Law and she plans to be well prepared to meet the demand.

When not working on her files, Farrah can be found volunteering with various law committees, coaching for the Calgary Track and Field Club, snowboarding and working on her golf game.
